History

In early 2006, Simon Tonks had a vision to establish a company which specialised in the fields of structural bonding and glass lamination.  The aim was to provide a quality service for both fabricators and manufacturers alike.

 

Specialist Glass Services Limited was registered with Companies House and opened for business on March 2nd 2006, with a 1000sq/ft factory in Buttershaw, Bradford.

 

Already approved for production by Dow Corning in 2006, Specialist Glass Services Limited obtained full Dow Corning Quality Bond Membership in October 2011, allowing fast track results for tested materials and extended warranties for customer products.

 

Our prior knowledge of cold pour resin lamination also provided Specialist Glass Services Limited with the skills to operate a precision service in accordance with Unilam 1418 resin guidelines. In 2020 Specialist Glass Services Limited switched to using Kommerling AHV3, a 3 part liquid composite resin, as this was a far superior product which also offered much quicker cure times.

Our Director - Simon Tonks

Apprenticed with Bradford Glass Limited from the age of 15, Simon began his career as a shop front glazier, progressing onto replacing domestic double glazing units and then onto replacement aluminium windows and patio doors.

 

He completed several courses including his City in Guilds in Glazing at college in Bristol and product training at Kawneer in Runcorn.

 

Simon then joined the sales team, selling stock glass and glazing products.  Around this time Bradford Glass Limited underwent a change of ownership to join the Royal Doulton Group before being bought out by Solarglas.

 

In his late twenties, Simon moved to Airedale Glass and Glazing Limited of Yeadon, Leeds.  He became part of their glass sales team before a swift 6 month progression to a commercial curtain wall and window estimator position.  It was during this time that Simon honed his skills drafting technical drawings, producing detailed cutting lists, procuring materials for larger projects and working closely with the Dow Corning 993 Structural Bonding aspect of the company.

After twenty years, Airedale Glass and Glazing Limited unfortunately went into administration but Simon saw this as an ideal opportunity to start his own company, giving rise to Specialist Glass Services Limited in 2006.
